What an honor and privilege to begin Season 31 as the new director of CoMMA! This year as we continue to grow the opportunities to enjoy CoMMA, I realize that the patrons are the heartbeat of the success of our theatre.
This season, I promise – I know you’re still gonna love it!
This season we have upgraded our refreshments before the show and during intermission. Every show will now have a featured complimentary pre-show sampling, from local restaurants showing off their best, to warm fresh baked cookies. You will also notice new volunteers with our AARP Blue Blazers. The CoMMA Ambassadors are joining our customer service team. From opening doors, to offering curbside assistance, or serving a fresh cookie, these ambassadors are connecting CoMMA to the next generation of patrons. They are school teachers, theatre students, future leaders and people who have a love for CoMMA and the performing arts. We are confident that the Blue Blazers, the Ambassadors and the upgraded refreshments will make your experience at CoMMA enjoyable.
Another new addition this season is the Etta Baker Memorial Statue. This beautiful bronze statue will be dedicated and presented in the spring of 2017. CoMMA is partnering with Burke County Public Schools by providing a comprehensive lesson for music students to study Etta Baker during Black History Month. Stay tuned for the announcement of the dedication date, to include a commemorative gift to all that attend.
MainStage Morganton 2016 - 2017 will include 20 performances, an increase from last season. Seasons 31 and 32 will be transitioning years into a wider variety of shows. I am exploring a new à la carte season ticket, which would enable patrons to ‘build your own season’ according to your personal taste and budget.
We have two great Broadway shows coming to the foothills: Tony award winning “Pippin” and “42nd Street”. We also welcome some great dance shows, including “Fame” and the Russian National Ballet’s performance of “Cinderella”. Plan ahead to experience some of the best shows around, right here in hometown Morganton…and don’t miss the “The Game Show”, I promise you will leave laughing and sharing with others!
I look forward to serving as your new director. I am only a phone call or hand shake away! Please introduce yourself to me, as I am excited to make new friendships and build relationships as we share great times at CoMMA.
See you at the door!
Dr. W. Jim Smith, Executive Director
